What is FCL and LCL Freight Transportation? What are the Differences?

The most preferred solution of maritime transportation is container transportation. In both international and domestic maritime transportation, the container maritime transportation solution provides the opportunity to deliver your cargo safely and quickly. Container transportation solutions are divided into two based on the area where the container can be used. FCL and LCL container transportation solutions are an important detail that should be considered for those who prefer maritime transportation.

What is LCL (Less Container Load)?

Containers used in maritime transportation generally have standard dimensions. If you are planning to send your cargo by sea transportation, you can rent a certain area in the container instead of renting a container itself.

LCL is known as Less Than Container Load because it does not load the container totally. It can also be known as partial load. With LCL transportation, you can send your cargo anywhere in the world at affordable prices in a secure method such as a container. In short, your cargo does not need to take up an entire standard container.

The freight forwarder you have agreed with receives your cargo and sends it to its destination by combining it with other cargoes in its own warehouse. The transit times of LCL and FCL loading are usually the same.

What is FCL (Full Container Load)?

If you are planning to send your cargo directly by renting an entire container, FCL transportation, i.e. Full Container Load, will be a good choice for you. The FCL mode of transportation usually provides the best price for your large volume shipments.

If your cargo is the capacity of a 20' container or more (roughly 9-10 pallets of cargo), FCL is a much better option for you. Since you rent the entire container in FCL transportation, it is the most cost-effective for you to use the entire container.
